MAG

MAG, also known as “massive action game” is shaping up to be one of  the most anticipated games of the year. Zipper Interactive has set out to create an online MP game that is much larger on any platform scale than we have ever seen before. Online MP is not foreign by any means to Zipper either, well known for there accomplishments in the Socom franchise that excelled with it’s amazing online MP features. MAG’s 256 player  scheme seems to be working out nicely and since Sony’s Seattle gamers day event where journalists have gone hands on, a lot has surfaced. So let’s get down to the basics of MAG.

Upon jumping into a game, you are matched into squads of eight members, with a dedicated squad leader. Three squads join to make a platoon which also has a squad leader. Each platoon is a member of the Army which has a  top level commander over seeing everything. Each army suggestively, will be made up of 128 members on each side to battle it out in a 256 player battle, while commanders and squad leaders are bellowing out orders and FRAGO’S. FRAGO’S are orders that take place as the battle changes pace. The smaller squads and platoons carrying out these orders will engage in smaller battles to help ease the achievement of the ultimate goal of the map. For following these orders and being a team player with your squad you will earn extra bonus points and will also come with plenty of benefits including, faster reload times and the ability to run and maneuver faster.  Along with all the orders you will try and carry out in game each map will have it’s own dedicated main objective to accomplish.

We should hear all about MAG at this years E3, which is just right around the corner. As of right now though the game seems to be shaping up quite nicely and will surely be another one of Zippers great games, among the shelf of Socom games. It seems that Zipper wants the throne back for military shooters online as Socom once reigned supreme. With 256 player matches, solid game play, and sharp graphics, any fan of shooters will probably enjoy this one.

SuperCar Challenge, Euopean beta; gameplay thoughts.

Posted by Brandon Sikes (BigRailer19) On April - 29 - 2009

Super Car Challenge (click for more screens)

We were lucky enough to get a chance to play the online MP beta for SuperCar Challenge. These are some thoughts about the game beta and how it plays. This is an exclusive European beta as well, but seems pretty far along for a beta. The first thing that came to my mind when I first picked up my PS3 controller and started playing was, Slow and Steady wins the race. These “super cars” will absolutely rip the pavement off the road, but slow and steady is better than throttle down all the time, otherwise you will quickly learn that it is very easy to go power-sliding right into a guard rail. So how does it play? Well lets get down to it.

The mp features are pretty standard, you can host or join a race with up to eight other drivers. You can also invite friends into the race as well. You can choose from 3 different cars and two different tracks in dry or wet conditions. Remember this is a beta. The three “super cars” you can choose from is the Enzo Ferrari, Aston Martin DBR9, and the McLaren F1. Each car races entirely different. So you choose based on your driving style. You can choose between an automatic transmission, a semi-auto where it shifts down for you when needed but you control the up-shift, or manual transmissions. I would like to say that racing with a manual transmission is very easy in this game and they made shifting very accessible as you use your right analog stick, by pushing it up, you shift up and by moving it down, you shift down. It works very well.

The neat thing about this game is it has a unique learning curve, you really do need to be a hard core racing fan or it will take practice to learn how to race these cars. Don’t let that scare you off though the game helps you out in lots of ways. First off you can choose to have racing lines on. Doing this you will notice a solid green line on the track. As you are racing this line will show you where your car should be on the track to enter and exit corners better and put you in a better position to execute the race flawlessly. What is also great about the race line, is it will turn yellow in spots you need to slow down or be cautious and turn red when you need to be on the brake hard, but don’t think it means tap your brake or drop a gear or two, when it’s red it means BRAKE. This feature can be turned off as well. Not only that but you can select to have auto braking on. This feature helps you learn to time brakes better by doing it for you.

Overall, the game is great for getting to only experience the online MP and being in beta. The graphics are pretty solid and the environment is beautiful. It’s a shame the only time you get to experience it is when you have wrecked and slowed down, because everything is a blur when in top gear driving a Ferrari. The cars and mechanics run very smooth and act very realistically. The cars have weight and each one feels different than the other. The racing is very fun and the tracks offer variety to race on. Even though you take control of cars that are known to burn some rubber, again relying on the speed of the car will ultimately send you off the track, or into a spiral.  The fact is it is realistic and any fan of cars and racing should enjoy this game given they have the patience to learn the driving. It does not make the game bad that they took the route of going realistic either. In fact it makes a very enjoyable experience when you have gotten the driving down and can enter and exit turns flawlessly after having it pinned coming down a straight stretch. I couldn’t help but smile though when my car spun out from the raw power because it shows how serious they were in making a realistic game and have succeeded thus far.
